First wakesurf experience

First time wakesurf? Everything worth knowing.

If you’re researching wakesurf lessons and planning your first try — this article answers all your questions. If you read it through, you’ll arrive better-prepared than 90% of our guests, and your first 60-minute session will produce significantly more time on the wave instead of frustrated falls.

1. How long until I stand up?

Our average beginner stands up on the board in 10-15 minutes. This means the first 15 minutes of your booking are ‘learning time’, after that you’re surfing independently. Some stand up in 5 minutes, others ask for 25-30 minutes — totally normal, depends on coordination and water experience.

2. Need to swim?

Yes, basic swimming ability is needed because you fall into the water multiple times during learning. Life jacket is mandatory for everyone and saves energy, but if you can’t swim at all we don’t recommend it. The instructor is right next to you the whole time.

3. From what age?

From age 8 we recommend wakesurf. For younger guests we offer SUP, small waterski, or boat-ride options. No upper age limit — we have 70+ year-old retired guests successfully riding.

4. Do I need to be athletic?

Not necessarily. Wakesurf depends more on balance and coordination than on strength. An average adult rides independently after 1-2 sessions. Trained athletes progress faster, but it’s not a requirement.

5. How does a typical booking go?

  1. Arrival: arrive at the marina (Wiking Yacht Club Marina or Budapest Yacht Club) 15 minutes before the booked time. Introduce yourself, register.
  2. Preparation: life jacket, board selection, quick theoretical instruction (5 minutes).
  3. On the water: we get on the boat, head out to the Danube, the instructor demonstrates the wave.
  4. Learning: one by one you get on the board and try riding the wave behind the boat. The instructor guides you over the boat’s mic.
  5. Independent surfing: once you’re up, you enjoy the wave for 10-15 minutes, then switch with the next rider.
  6. Closing run: at the end of the booking, a final free run, group photos, return to marina.

6. How much does a first session cost?

A 60-minute booking for 4 people on the boat costs around 120,000-150,000 HUF depending on boat type. That’s split among 4 people, so 30,000-37,500 HUF per person. The booking includes the boat, instructor, boards, life jackets, captain, fuel.

7. Can we go in the rain?

Yes, in light rain wakesurf goes on (you’ll get wet anyway). But in thunderstorms or strong winds we don’t go out for safety reasons.

8. What should I bring?

9. What NOT to do

  • Don’t overeat right before the booking — light meal 2 hours before is best
  • Don’t drink alcohol before boating
  • Don’t bring jewellery, watches that can fall off
  • Don’t stress — enjoy it!
